A contemporary band

The Affinis Ensemble has rightly been called a ’contemporary band’; they are known for involving a variety of stylistic traits found in all parts of musical life today in their music-making. As such this seven-piece ensemble is a dream-come-true for composers who are not necessarily interested in keeping within the A4 formats of modern art music. The Affinis setup will support every thinkable (and unthinkable) configuration with different types of keyboards, guitars, percussion, trumpets, saxophones, oboes and clarinets.

This is all much in the line of thinking of the composers appearing on the present release. Eivind Buene’s Anatomic Notebook was written as 30 sketches in a notebook, and if your thoughts go to Zappa when hearing parts of this, you’re not the only one. In the two smaller Stus-pieces Rune Rebne is taking his first steps towards a naïvely absurd and simplified idiom in his music – and the resulting sound in the hands of these musicians is fascinating. Mark Adderley has been writing for the Affinis for many years. In Salient Point he brings together playfulness and a high degree of technical ability as he combines the crisp sound of the oboe, the sharp attack of the electric guitar with an overwhelmingly virtuoso piano part. Kaare Dyvik Husby’s Möbius’ Band was the first piece to be written especially for Affinis Ensemble. The piece is an auditive interpretation of the mathematician August Ferdinand Möbius’s famous twisted paper ribbon.
