Two important Norwegian composers. Two important string quartets.

The Norwegian String Quartet here performs two of Norway’s most important modern composers’ string quartets!

Antonio Bibalo adds a streak of internationalism to Norwegian music, and he is an original and imaginative figure on our musical scene. Even if he is most known for his compositions for the stage, which are invariably premiered abroad with great success long before they are shown in his home country, he has also written a great number of important instrumental works. On this album we are treated with his String Quartet, a drama depicting a difficult period of his life, where strong feelings are woven into his technique, and the firm inner core reflects his own, much-needed courage.

Arne Nordheim has for a long time been one of the most conspicuous figures in the musical landscape of Norway, where he is recognized as a very successful pathfinder. He has written works in most genres, but his principal instrument is undeniably the orchestra. Here, however, we get to know his String Quartet, a mature work that anticipates many features later to be recognized as typical for their author, with recognizable influence from his two favourite composers at the time: Béla Bartók and Fartein Valen.
