OMN is a chamber ensemble specializing in the performance of contemporary music. It was founded in 1996 from among the students of the Karol Szymanowski Music Academy in Katowice, on the initiative of Aleksander Laso?. Its principal goal is the promotion of new music and the classical works of the 20th-century repertoire. The repertoire of the ensemble also includes music of earlier periods. The orchestra is now made up of graduates and members of staff of the Music Academy in Katowice. It performs mainly under the leadership of Szymon Bywalec and Aleksander Laso?. The Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej pursues a wide-ranging concert activity. Since 1999 it has been invited by the Warsaw Autumn Festival, where it worked with prominent Polish and foreign conductors and soloists. Since 2001, the orchestra has hosted the New Music Festival in Bytom. Thanks to a grant from the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung in Munich, it has participated (since 2002) in the project ‘Förderpreise für Polen’ aimed at the promotion of the young generation of Polish composers. It has taken part in such festivals as Musica Polonica Nova in Wroc?aw, the International Days of Music by Kraków Composers, New Music Marathon in Prague, Melos-Ethos in Bratislava, Anima Mundi in Piza, the Silesian Days of Contemporary Music, the Velvet Curtain in Lviv and the Festival of Pawe? Szyma?ski’s Music in Warsaw. The Orkiestra Muzyki Nowej has to its credit many first performances of works by foreign and Polish composers, some of which have been written for or dedicated to the ensemble. The Orchestra’s Recordings of Jerzy Kornowicz’s and Pawe? Szyma?ski’s music were awarded at the unesco International Composers’ Rostrum (2000, 2007). The New Music Orchestra’s debut CD, a joint production of pwm Edition and dux, featuring works by Boles?aw Szabelski, Henryk Miko?aj Górecki, Eugeniusz Knapik, Aleksander Laso? and Marcel Chyrzy?ski.
