Einar Steen-Nøkleberg
Biography
Einar Steen-Nøkleberg made a sensational threefold public debut in 1970 with three separate recitals on the piano, harpsichord and clavichord. He studied with Nicolai Dirdal and Hans Leygraf, and also counts his organ studies with Arild Sandvold as an important influence. For forty years Steen-Nøkleberg has performed with orchestras in Norway and abroad, and he has won numerous awards including a German higher education institution award (1969), the Norwegian piano competition (1972), the Norwegian Music Critics" Prize (1975), the Lindeman Prize (1982), The Grieg Prize (1992), and in 1994 he was made a Knight, First Class, of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav. During the past season he has given concerts in many cities, including Oslo, Moscow, Riga, Bucharest, Sofia, Buenos Aires and Rio de Janeiro. Einar Steen-Nøkleberg is an honorary member of Oslo Music Teachers" Association and the Norwegian Musicians" Society.

Only 19 years old, more or less directly from his debut as a concert pianist in his hometown of Trondheim, Thomas D. A. Tellefsen traveled to remote Paris to further his studies in music. Immensely talented, Thomas quickly made his way to the inner circles of this musical metropolis, and in 1844 he was introduced to Fréderic Chopin.

He wrote his music at a time when the Norwegian national spirit was being cast, and from his urban dwellings in Oslo (then Christiania) he managed to bring in the elements of folk music which came to distinguish the young nation.
