A portrait of the outstanding violinist Peter Herresthal, performing four new violin concertos written for him - together with Norway's foremost orchestras today.

Composers seek exceptional performers - knowing that the expression of their music goes from potential to reality in the performance. Herresthal has received both acclaim and awards for his recordings of the concertos by Nordheim, Bibalo and Thommessen, and with Catch Light he confirms his position as a deeply engaged interpretor on the contemporary music scene.

Performer and composer in mutual inspiration

Four new violin concertos see the light of day through Herresthal's immaculate violin tone; two of them captured in concert, the two other recorded in studio. In all these concertos Herresthal has been directly involved in the creational process. In this way Peter's unique qualities as a performer is reflected in four different works.

Building a repertoire of Norwegian violin concertos

With his great capacity and stylistic knowledge, Peter Herresthal has come a long way in actually building a repertoire of new Norewegian violin concertos, mostly with composers from his own generation. Stylistically the composers Ness, Kverndokk, Hellstenius and Asheim are very different. It is within this broad register of expression it becomes particularly fascinating to hear how Herresthal brings it all together with his sense of phrasing and the highly cultivated tone.

Peter Herresthal

Norwegian violinist Peter Herresthal (b.1970) is recognized as a brilliant and inspired performer of contemporary music for violin. He enjoys a close relationship with Denmark's leading composer Per Nørgård. Peter has also given the Norwegian and Spanish premieres of Thomas Adès" violin concerto Concentric Paths, and gave the Australian premiere at the Melbourne Festival with the composer conducting. Peter Herresthal is professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music Oslo and visiting professor at The Royal College of Music London. He will curate a concert series at the Bergen Festival from 2011 to 2014.
