Prepare to be amazed! The brilliant young Norwegian saxophonist, composer and improviser Rolf-Erik Nystrøm (1975) is a unique talent.
In his musical idiom Nystrøm merges a multitude of musical expressions - jazz, free jazz, contemporary music, baroque, improv, electronica, black metal and ethno. He displays exceptional technical abilities and an absolute presence in what he does. This is his solo debut on CD - Concepts of Sorrows & Dangers - a personal and spectacular musical journey.
The Music and The Composers
This disc puts the listener directly in touch with the most interesting and approachable part of the Norwegian scene of contemporary music. The spectacular soloist is the common factor, plus the fact that these composers all involve elements from genres such as noise, improv, conceptualism, speed-Balkan-boogie and more. The title track is a saxophone concerto - written for and about Rolf-Erik with lots of biographical background material.
Rolf Wallin"s (1957) background in experimental jazz and rock groups has proved a fruitful compliment to his career as a classical composer. Øyvind Torvund"s (1976) music is inspired by his background in free improvising on the guitar. Trond Reinholdtsen (1972) at present works on documentary music and contextualized music. The virtuoso writing of Iannis Xenakis" (1922-2001) has an important influence on contemporary music today. Maja Ratkje (1973) is also well established as performer, mainly in connection with the anarchistic improvisation ensemble SPUNK. Luca Francesconi (1956) studied composition with Stockhausen and Berio and Tracce is a multi-layered solo piece for saxophone solo. Lars Petter Hagen (1975) works with instrumental and electroacoustic music as well as sound installations and music for stage and film.
Inner Song
Rolf-Erik Nystrøm completes this collection of portraits with four self-portraits - four of the tracks are improvisations by Rolf-Erik. Here he takes saxophone playing beyond all known limits, and re-defines the instrument and its possibilities totally. No less.
