This release portrays the Norwegian composer Sven Lyder Karhs through eight of his recent works, performed by some of the most acclaimed performers of contemporary music today.
As a composer, Kahrs belongs to a continental tradition, having studied with Brian Ferneyhough and Emmanuel Nunes. Based in Paris for the past 20 years, Kahrs have worked closely with outstanding performers like ensemble recherche, cellists Pierre Strauch and Anton Lukoszevieze. The eight works on the album are written over a ten year period, ranging from solo works to large ensemble pieces with electronics. For the work Und fernhin, ehe es alles geschieht, the surround electronics were developed especially in the Heinrich Strobel Experimentalstudio in Südwestdeutsche Rundfunk, Freiburg.
The album title is taken from a poem by Elisabet Norseng, also being sung in Sparrows. Norseng has also made drawings for the cover and booklet of this release.
Sven Lyder Kahrs is inspired by poetry, philosophy and visual art, and he sees his music as a dialogue within a wider cultural context. In this respect, the titles of Kahrs" works are crucial; quotations from writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Éluard and Friedrich Hölderlin often point the way to further musical reflection.
The works on this recording are very different from each other. Each of them addresses questions which do not necessarily reappear in any of the others. There is a similar diversity at the level of detail, where it produces a vibrant presence which captures the listener"s attention. The music seeks to encompass an abundance of nuances and an element of unpredictability which cannot be ordered hierarchically or be reduced to constellations of constituent elements. It forces the listener to become active, constantly trying to differentiate, grasp and compare unclear qualities densely
Sven Lyder Kahrs (1959) was awarded the Arne Nordheim composers prize in 2005. In 2008 he was composer in residence of the Tage für Neue Musik Zürich. He was awarded the Edvard Prize in 2001 for the work Wie Ein Hauch, commisioned by the Ultima festival for the Arditti Quartet. At present, Kahrs is working on commission from BBC3 for the ensemble Apartment House.
